On Sunday the 8th September, Tamworth travelled to Stafford’s grounds for the first fixtures of the season: a pitch up and play between other midlands teams. It gave the girls their first opportunity to play with new to Tamworth players and to welcome players from Market Bosworth providing healthy numbers on and off the pitch.
The first game saw the Tamworth under 18 girls play a Melbourne opposition in a 24 minute match (like all the games to follow) and get a feel for the new season’s team. Initially Tamworth played panicked but quickly settled into the game to achieve a final score of 19-7. Tamworth try scorers of the game were Lucie x2 and Lexi.
The girls continued to build their on field rapport during their second game against Stafford. Arguably the hardest game of the day for the girls, they had to dig deep to put the scores on the board, and this was reflected with a 17-0 win for Tamworth. The three ties were dotted over the line by Lexi, Grace, and Sophia.
A Leek/Longton barbarians team were the final opposition for the girls, hosting some Tamworth girls to even up the numbers. This game allowed for lots of development among the girls as most played out of position and therefore became a bit more diverse in their skills. Despite this they managed the game well and finished it with a score of 21-5.
