Great day for Tamworth Ladies getting off to a winning start against Stone Ladies. It was a hard fought match as expected, but Tamworth had the edge on organisation & playing as a team.
The whole day was an incredible experience for the Ladies. Both teams had never played before so as expected they were very nervous.
The Tamworth Ladies got to a really strong start putting all the pressure on Stone & they spent most of the first session in there half. Just as Stone were starting to get on top they kicked a penalty to Charlotte Crawford caught the ball & ran it back 50 metres. Aimee Tudor picked up the loose ball at the breakdown & ran the try in from 30 metres out. Mikayla Redford kicked the conversion.
Stone came back at Tamworth breaking through tackles to score a converted try. There was no panic from the Tamworth ladies, they were playing well & just needed to tighten up there defence. Justr before the end of the next session after strong runs from Aimee Miller & Sophie Grant, Aimee Tudor ran in her second try from the 22. Mikayla Redford converted her second.
In the last session Tamworth totally dominated with some excellent open rugby passing the ball the full width of the pitch to open up Stones defence & create space in the middle for Charlotte Crawford to take advantage of scoring under the posts. Redford converted again leaving her with a 100% record after the first game.
Tamworth finished off the game in style going from strength to strength as they got more & more into the game.
Head coach Andy Smith said: He & the whole club were very proud of the Ladies and what they have achieved in such a short space of time. They are the pioneers for our new Tamworth Ladies team and they clearly set the foundations for the Ladies team on Sunday. Every aspect of the day was a great success and already they have inspired more Tamworth Ladies to join the team and take up the sport.
