Newark were the visitors to Wiggington Park this Saturday as Tamworth looked for improvements in what has been a torrid season so far not helped by an ever increasing injury list.
The game started in familiar fashion with Tamworth under the cosh from the off but what was obvious was how much more organised they seemed in defence and although Newark were still scoring pretty freely they were being made to work much harder for every point than previous opposition had been made to.
The hosts were also showing signs of improvement in an attacking sense too stringing together multiple phases which to the most part Newark dealt with quite comfortably but compared to the previous game Tamworth’s attacking efforts were like night and day culminating in them scoring a nice try with skipper Leighton Norton jinking his way to the line on his first game back since recovering from a hamstring injury. Jack Dalton added the extra two from the tee.
Newark had a fast skilful backline that Tamworth struggled to contain especially when they ran hard at them in the middle of the park and that’s where they picked up a lot of their scores in that area feeding off Tamworth defensive mistakes missed tackles putting them on the back foot from which they couldn’t recover quickly enough to keep Newark out.
Just when Tamworth could have done with a bit of luck all they got was bad luck as they had what seemed three good tries wiped off by the referee because he couldn’t see a clear grounding of the ball which although Newark would have still deservedly won the game the score line would have been a much better reflection of the game and Tamworth would have been rewarded with a four try bonus point.
But it wasn’t to be and referees at this level haven’t got the benefit of television match official and can only referee what they see.
So although this looks like another thrashing on paper there were huge improvements in the way Tamworth played and if lady luck had been a bit more generous the score would have been much closer.
Newark were excellent and ran out comfortable victors and we at Tamworth wish them every success for the remainder of the season.
