Tamworth gained promotion to the sixth tier of English rugby with an emphatic 48-0 victory over Camp Hill on Saturday.
They went into the game knowing a bonus point win would see them secure second place and with it promotion. But were also grounded enough to realise they still had a job to do and although they had beaten their opponents comfortably just a few weeks earlier they were taking nothing for granted.
An early score would definitely settle any nerves and that’s exactly what they got when Liam McGreevy burgled the ball from the depths of a Camp Hill maul breaking free he was brought down just short but the ball was recycled well and Conor Banham was perfectly placed to dive over to open the scoring.
Danny Norton extended the lead with a penalty kick seven minutes later before Tamworth were awarded a penalty try with Camp Hill’s centre seeing yellow for a high shot that prevented a certain score.
Tamworth’s barnstorming rugby continued as before the half hour mark they found themselves three tries to the good Kit Smith continuing his try scoring run this time just reaching the line despite the best efforts of the visiting defence.
This soon led to the all important bonus point fourth try Josh Roe touching down at the back of an unstoppable driving maul to take Tamworth into the break with a very healthy 29-0 lead.
The second period got underway in the same vein as the first had ended with Tamworth ruthless in attack and unbreakable in defence.
The fifth try came when Man of the Match Macualey Green squeezed in at the corner and the hosts were cruising. This was closely followed by a try for Leighton Norton a reward for his tireless hard work all afternoon.
Eamon Carroll got Tamworth’s seventh and final try as his tricky feet saw him ghost through the Camp Hill defence.
The crushing victory was rounded off by the boot of Danny Norton as he added the extra’s from the tee.
This was a performance that everyone involved can be proud of not only did they score seven great tries but their second shutout in as many weeks meant they had now played over 160 minutes of rugby without conceding a single point. And with those two attributes combined they are deservedly heading to Level Six. But with two games still to play they were allowed their Champagne celebrations but will be back to hard work on the training paddock in the week before a trip to Longton on Saturday.
